Description
Introduction Given the high mortality rate amongst new ventures, there has been a great deal of research effort directed at understanding the dynamics of small business start-ups and why some ventures survive and others fail during this period. Small business researchers have employed a number of different perspectives to explore small firm performance and survival, including owner/manager traits and background (Diochon, Menzies and Gasse, 2005; Reuber, Dyke and Fischer, 1990; Westhead and Birley, 1995) and/or industry knowledge (Smith and Gannon, 1987), utilization of the external support system (Good and Graves, 1993), networking (Birley, 1985; Davidsson and Honig, 2003), ability to access the requisite resources (Cooper, Woo and Dunkelberg, 1989; Wernerfelt, 1984), and the founder's technical expertise (McCarthy, Krueger and Schoenecker, 1990).
